WINSTON HOTEL (FERAL BREWING CRAFT BEER DINNER) - WINSTON HILLS, SYDNEY

Winston Hotel & Feral Brewing Craft Beer Dinner
168 Caroline Chisholm Drive
Winston Hills, Sydney

The Winston is an impressive hotel which has a variety of separate dining and lounge areas to choose from. It was popular, even on a wet Tuesday night, no doubt because the food is good and the atmosphere stylish and inviting.

The Feral Brewing Company, a microbrewery from Swan Valley, W.A, was hosting the night’s event. It was a Beer Dinner, designed to showcase the company’s products and match them with some amazing dishes from the Winston’s kitchen.

The venue was packed and long tables provided an opportunity to meet others and share some great food.

Throughout the evening, our hosts, Jackson and Luke from Feral, gave us a wealth of information about the beers they create and are so passionate about.

We started with a Sly Fox Summer Ale and a starter of smoked salmon and cream cheese roulade on homemade rye. Very tasty on both counts. The brew was a refreshing and light drop which went very nicely with the starter.

Then an impressive entrée platter arrived at the table, to be shared between 4 diners. Slow smoked beef brisket with pickles, chilli onion jam, mustard, slaw and bread. This was paired with Feral’s Hop Hog American IPA. We both liked the beer and agreed that it was a good match for the delicious dish. Lots of smoky flavours in the succulent beef  which we piled on the bread with the accompaniments. Needless to say, there was none leftover.

The main meal was a thing of beauty. Slow cooked lamb shoulder with salsa verde, delicious wilted spinach, lemon, charred heirloom carrots and almond gremolata, rosemary garlic potatoes. Can’t really go wrong with a line-up like that and it was beautifully cooked.

Everyone devoured that awesome meat until only the bare bone remained. Dame J and I would have chewed on that as well if we had a chance!

The beer on offer was the Feral Smoked Porter, an interesting smokey-tasting brew which went down so well with the lamb. My right-hand neighbour tried his best to score seconds of this one.

There was barely room for dessert but the key lime tart  with honeycomb and sweetened cream was just calling us too loudly!

Not too rich a finish to the meal, it was a tasty treat.

The Karma Citra India Black Ale was the pairing choice for this.

Beer with dessert may sound strange to some but most of my fellow diners would disagree.

This beer was a lovely smack in the face, with its dark malt and slight sweetness.

It was such a fun night and we shook many hands as we left. Dame J and I would definitely come here again for the great surrounds and food. Probably for a “Smokin Sunday” as we both love smoked meats and they do it themselves in house. The hotel hosts many functions and specials nights so if you’re in the area you should check it out.

Those Dames, who review for Sir and Mlady Dine Out, dined as guests of The Winston Hotel. Thanks to Amy Fourro of The Winston for the invitation.
