PHO NGON - HORNSBY, SYDNEY

Pho Ngon

We were in the mood for laksa. So why go to a Vietnamese restaurant you ask. Well we’d heard that they also make a tasty laksa at Pho Ngon and we were in the mood for some spicy noodles and soup.

Satay chicken skewers also aren’t a traditional Vietnamese dish but they were on the menu and we were looking for starters. We’re glad we ordered them. They were plump and juicy and the satay sauce had a real kick to it - much more than the usual satay sauces. These really were good.

Spring rolls are another of our “go-to” dishes. They come with either meat fillings or vegetarian. We went for the veg. They were much plumper than the usual rolls we have elsewhere but very tasty with plenty of filling surrounded by a nice crispy casing. We’d gladly have these “fat” rolls again.

Now for the laksa - after all this was the purpose of our visit! Prawns always look good in laksa sitting on top of the spicy soup with their bright colours standing out. We often head for this protein. Here most laksas have wontons in them which is unusual. You then choose what meat you want. It turned out that the wontons went really well. You also get plenty of prawns in it too which is great.

The next order was pho - well we were at a Vietnamese restaurant after all. Unsurprisingly, pho is a specialty dish here and hugely popular. Of course there’s a variety of proteins you can choose for your pho but the beef is the one most often chosen. The thin slices of beef cooked nicely in the hot broth. The “extras” that came with it added depth and flavour too.

The final dish was a vegetarian laksa. This was packed with goodies and again tasted great.

Pho Ngon isn’t a fancy place. Their focus is on the food. Service is fast and friendly. The food arrives quickly and is in big, tasty servings.
