PHO MAI - EASTWOOD, SYDNEY

We really enjoy Vietnamese food. It’s highly fragrant food with subtle flavours and often with a delicacy to it. With these thoughts swimming through our hungry heads we set off for Eastwood in Sydney’s Northern Suburbs to visit Pho Mai.

Don’t sugar cane prawns sound like a great dish? We’ve had them plenty of time before at other places and they’ve always been a “go to” dish. These were deconstructed and tasted just as good as they have elsewhere. It was a big serving too!

The spring rolls can be ordered as vegetarian or with meat. We had meat and they arrived hot, crispy and golden in a serving of four with a garnish of side salad. We do love hitting spring rolls at the start of a meal.

The dish of the night was undoubtedly the steamed rice with two pork chops and egg. The actual name is somewhat more complex but you can just ask for this and they’ll know what you want! The pork chops were delicious. The meat was almost crispy on the outside yet tender in the middle. Not bad at all for thin chops. The egg was done to perfection and the rest all went well. It was a big meal and great value too.

Our final larger dish was the stir-fried seafood with rice noodles. This comes in a variety of options so you can mix and match. It was a lovely dish again with plenty of flavour and lots of seafood. We struggled to finish all the food!

Pho Mai also do a range of pho dishes, unsurprisingly. While we didn’t try them this time, there’s always next visit!

Pho Mai isn’t a fancy place in terms of décor but it does serve great food in good sized servings and it’s great value too. It’s a good spot to fill up on good tasty food.
