LA THAI - THORNLEIGH, SYDNEY

La Thai
Unit 1/30 Sefton Rd
Thornleigh, Sydney

Tucked away in a fairly obscure location in suburban Thornleigh is La Thai. It’s a little place and a little hard to find and there aren’t any other eateries around it. Nonetheless, it’s a busy place churning out tasty Thai food to the eat-in crowd and the many more getting takeaway.

The description of the La Thai rolls intrigued us. They are a combination of prawns, crab and chicken with water chestnut and shallots, rolled together in a crisp tofu skin and served with plum sauce. We just had to get this. They were bigger pieces than we had expected and very tasty. We’d gladly have this again.

We love fish cakes. They always hit the right spot as long as they’re not chewy. These were tender and tasty and very moorish. The La Thai fried chicken wingettes was our next selection. Fried chook is always popular and these marinated, battered and deep fried goodies came with sweet chilli sauce. Finally, the Prawns De Ring sounded like deep fried goodness too. These were lightly battered deep fried prawns served with onion rings and yet more of that sweet chilli sauce. A serving of prawn chips added even more crunch to this meal.

They’re on most people’s lists for Thai food aren’t they! These tasty satay chicken skewers had lovely tender and juicy chicken topped with a generous coating of tangy peanut satay sauce. We always manage to finish off all the sauce too!

Sir loves Mee Grob and a lot of Thai places don’t seem to have it on their menu. It’s basically crispy noodles in a sweet sticky sauce. The sweetness puts some people off this dish but not him. He ate most of this one!

Soft shell crab is something that many like and many don’t. We love it. Spotting a smaller serving on the entrée menu was even better as we were after a good variety of dishes. The crab was delicately done with a light batter over tender crab. The flavours were lovely too. We’ve had a lot of SSC over the years and this was definitely one of the better ones.

We often order salt and pepper calamari but this time we decided to venture away from this and try the salt and pepper tofu instead. It was certainly very tasty but it’s pretty hard to beat the calamari version.

We realised a bit too late that a very high proportion of our dishes were fried. Oh well - our Thai fry nigh was indulgently tasty.

La Thai really satisfied us. The food was tasty, the servings were good sized and the prices were very reasonable. It’s easy to see why it’s been around for quite a while.
