You’d need to be living under a rock to not have heard of Din tai Fung. It’s a brand that has garnered a tremendous reputation in Australia and in fact globally. They’re big in the dumpling world. Here there’s a touch screen on every table for ordering. They have the menu on them with pictures too so it’s an easy exercise. It’s kind of fun too.

We do love a bit of spice so the spicy shrimp and pork wontons grabbed our attention straight away. They looked good on our touch screen too and fortunately the dish that arrived looked the same. The wontons were plump and juicy and the spicy sauce was hard to resist. We eagerly dipped and re-dipped.

We couldn’t resist having the “other” shrimp and pork wontons - the fried ones. Yes we’d already had them steamed but we do love some crispy treats too! These arrived golden and were delicious. We were glad we’d ordered both versions.

The prawn pancake intrigued us. It looked like a giant prawn schnitzel in some ways. It was thin and covered in a crispy coating of crumbs. It was a great way to eat some prawn meat. A quick dip in the chilli sauce went nicely too.

We had to have dumplings. After all, Din Tai Fung is famous for their dumplings. We chose the vegetarian dumplings that came in a serving of six. They were hot and tasty. There are plenty of sauces on your table for dipping too.

We love calamari. These rings were probably an odd choice in many respects at a dumpling joint but we just felt like them. They were very big and gave us our necessary deep-fried and crumbed hit.

We were seated near where the steaming was taking place for the dumplings. It’s a precision exercise and something that was fascinating to watch. the skill and dexterity was impressive. If we’d been doing it we would have had third degree burns!

It’s easy to see why Din Tai Fung is so famous. The food really is good. It’s a busy place but they handle it well. They’re used to this. You really must try their dumplings but don’t be afraid to try some of their other offerings too. they’ve got plenty of variety.
