A BITE OF MY SHANGHAI - EASTWOOD, SYDNEY

A Bite of my Shanghai
3 Trelawney St
Eastwood, Sydney

In the Asian food mecca that is Eastwood sits A Bite of my Shanghai. It’s a fairly simple place that focusses on the food - and it does this really well. The menu is extensive. You get a book and a paper ordering form with all the choices on it - taking all of the two sides. You choose and mark the sheet with your selections. It’s simple and works. The drinks are written on the sheet when you order.

We started with the tantalisingly named xiaolongbao with caviar. Now we love these tasty, meaty, soup filled dumplings anyway but having the caviar topping was even better. The texture and added taste took these to another level. A serving of five meant we fought over the last one!

Salt and pepper squid seems to be on our orders a lot these days. Eating here didn’t help us avoid it either. We caved in and had it again. It was a good decision. The plate was piled high with golden pieces of squid. These were all crispy on the outside and tended inside and literally slathered in spices. It was delicious.

We were seeking either a beef dish or a noodle dish and found both in one. It was a massive serving of beautiful noodles with a great sauce and tender pieces of beef. At under $10 a plate it was incredible value too.

Fried chicken? Why not! The karaage chicken almost shattered when we bit into it, revealing tender chicken meat inside. It was another big serving too with a tangy, spicy mayo for dipping. While the mayo was tasty, we loved the chicken best on its own.

We of course grabbed a few drinks. The selection is quite limited. They do seem to have white wine but not red. They have a few beers but not spirits. There are plenty of non-alcoholic choices though. We had both.

This place is a great find. The food is delicious. The servings are big. The service helpful and fast. The décor is basic but go for the food. You'll be back!
