GIA HOI - HORNSBY, SYDNEY

We are quite partial to sharing plates with Asian food as it’s reminiscent of ‘Tapas’, so we decided to order entirely from the entrée menu. We’ve done this occasionally lately from places that seem to have a really good variety of starters. It’s a great way to create a grazing menu - and it doesn’t always have to be Mediterranean! As Gia Hoi is BYO our wine was our own, a lovely chilled rose. We’ll regularly have lighter and sometimes sweeter wines with spicy food.

The words “deep fried” seem so appropriate for starters. With this in mind, the deep fried wontons leaped off the page at us. They looked so were crisp in the pictures and lived up to this when they arrived. Just as importantly, the filling inside was nice too.

Both loving seafood our next dish was Salt and Pepper King Prawn without the shell. While we normally head for salt and pepper calamari the idea of prawns for a change grabbed us. They certainly didn’t skimp on the prawns either with the plate piled high. We both enjoyed this dish which had those really nice familiar salt and pepper flavours.

Our favourite dish of the night was the fried pork chop with dried egg noodles. The pork chop was plentiful on the plate and really tender and tasty. The dried egg noodle combined really well with this dish and the gravy on top added a further kick of flavour yet again.

Gia Hoi isn’t a flashy place but these simple surroundings provide really tasty food in big servings. It’s worth a visit and there was plenty more to the menu than what we had. Next time we’ll explore even more.
