While this is a normal Chinese restaurant, it was the lure of their lunchtime yum cha that drew us here. We really love yum cha! They have a pretty good variety here too with trolleys going past at regular intervals. You can also order other dishes from the menu too. We started with some tasty steamed prawn and garlic chive dumplings. They’re a favourite of ours anywhere . After a quick dip in the nearby chilli garlic sauce they disappear quickly.

Of course anything deep fried and crispy is worth at least a second look. These deep fried prawn dumplings were golden, crispy and delicious.

These steamed prawn dumplings are also a regular on our list at yum cha. They were plump and tender and filled with plenty of tasty prawn meat.

Crispy squid always looks so inviting to us. This plate did so we eagerly grabbed it. The tentacles were lightly coated and had a nice crispy outer layer over tender meat inside.

These scallop wontons were another crispy delight. There was plenty of crunch with these treats. The crunch when we bit into them was audible well beyond our table!

We always try to finish yum cha with custard tarts. This was the perfect serving as there were three - two for Mlady who lives for them and one for Sir. They arrived still warm and the flaky pastry was delicious as was the creamy custard inside them.

Joyful House serves yum cha by day and then reverts to a more traditional Chinese menu by night. It’s a good mix and seems to work well for them.

With very few yum cha places around these days, and especially in Sydney’s north, it easy to see why Joyful House gets good foot traffic through their doors at lunch time.
