BLUE EYE DRAGON - PYRMONT, SYDNEY

It doesn't look like there's a restaurant there when you start to get close to Blue Eye Dragon. You'll probably say something like "It's got to be here somewhere, but this is a church here!" Fear not, you are in fact in the right place. Blue Eye Dragon is inside what looks like a former church hall. They've done a nice job in decking it out, yet they've managed to keep the character of the former hall as well in a tasteful way. We'd seen their menu online and already decided that we were going to have our own version of Taiwanese Tapas, because there were so many tasty looking smaller dishes.

We started with the spicy chicken won-tons with house chilli sauce. The hot steaming bowl of won-tons arrived looking amazing and tasted just as good. It was a good sized serving for a starter too. The sauce did have a nice kick without overpowering everything.

With so many choices, they actually kame it a bit easier for guests here with an entrée tasting plate for two. This has five different starters and was exactly what we wanted! First of the five tom arrive were the vegetarian spring rolls with house plum sauce. These crispy treats were simply great. Next was the beef pancake rolls with shallots and coriander. The soft pancake outer wrap surrounded a tasty and tangy beef filling. Another winner. Then there were the plump dumplings. We had two varieties - prawn dumplings and pork dumplings. They were both packed with filling and each had their own dipping sauce. Now we love dumplings anyway, but these were really good by any standard.

These scallops were the final item of our five dish entrée tasting plate. They arrived steamed and in half shells served with a gentle drizzle of house fish sauce. Delish.

Our other order was one we couldn't resist - salt and pepper soft shell crab. Yes we know it's a dish that is widely available, but we love it. As such, we can tell a good version - and this was a very tasty one. We ate it quickly - each trying to get a bit more than the other!

We were very impressed with Blue Eye Dragon. It's a bit hard to find as it doesn't have massive signage or stand out. It's worth finding though and has great food and service in quirky surroundings. In warmer weather its lovely outdoor area would be so nice too. We'll definitely be back to try some of their main courses some time!
