We do love Italian food. Really love it. We spend a lot of time in the city too so we’re always looking out for a new eatery or an old one we just haven’t visited. Macchiato is in a prime position on the corner of Liverpool and Pitt Streets. In an area of Thai and Korean food it’s still there and going strong after many years.

The bruschetta here is great. It’s actually on a focaccia. The bruschetta al Pomodoro has a tasty fresh topping of tomato, basil, red onion, Parmigiano Reggian all drizzled with aceto balsamico di Reggio Emilia. It was a vibrant starter that was extremely refreshing and fresh.

Calamari is a dish we seem to have very regularly - and this visit was no exception. This calamari fritti was polenta dusted squid served with Parmesan aioli and lime. It was extremely tender squid which we all noticed straight away. It had lovely flavours too.

The Margherita pizza is such a simple yet effective dish. It showcases the basic ingredients and the base and nothing can hide. This one was a lovely version. Arriving straight from their woodfire oven it was topped with pomodoro, Mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil.

Hail Cesare - well the salad in this instance! The Cesare salad as expected had cos lettuce and bacon also served with Hunter Valley poached egg, pane croccante (croutons), Parmigiano Reggiano and Parmesan aioli. You can add extras too and this one had BBQ chicken.

The calzone was a monster. This thing was huuuuge. It was undoubtedly the dish of the day. It was filled with slow roasted Junee lamb ragout, Stracchino cheese and fior di latte with radicchio on top and a side bowl of tzatziki as a sauce. Did we mention it was big? Well it was very tasty too. The lamb was tender and had big flavours and it was a dish to remember.

The final dish was another pizza - Gamberi. The Gamberi was topped with prawns of course but also had Mozzarella, grilled zucchini slices, cherry tomato, chilli, basil and extra virgin olive oil. We love prawns with pizza or pasta.

Macchiato is a busy place. It gets plenty of traffic right from the start of the day by selling morning coffees. This continues throughout the day. Lunchtime is especially busy.

Macchiato is a place that has been around for a while. Good Italian food in the CBD is a winner and this place stays popular for that very reason.
