PAPIROEN - COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

Papiroen
Christiansholm Island
Copenhagen, Denmark

Imagine a giant warehouse filled with street food outlets, bars, cafes and bakeries all under one roof. Imagine there are over 60 outlets there and its a really cool place to be and that the food and drink choices are awesome. Well Papiroen is that place. The word Papiroen actually means Paper Island and this literal name is very appropriate. The facts are this is an island and it was where paper was once stored for the Danish Press Association. It became the location for Copenhagen Street Food in 2014.

On a fine day or evening the prime seats are outside gazing out over the harbour in Copenhagen. They’ve packed in plenty of tables and chairs there and they fill up fast. Still, with the water views and sunshine its easy to see why they go quickly.

Food means wanting a drink and there are plenty of choices here. the places at the front tend to cater for those sitting at the front while those that venture further inside can find some other really nice venues right at the back.

We were there on a fine but coolish day and even then all the outside tables were taken already. It turned out to be a bonus almost as we grabbed a few beers to start with and a prime position in front of their indoor fireplace. It teases pleasant sipping some craft beers and gazing in to the flickering flames.

After a few drinks the mind naturally drifts towards food. We’d already done a lap of honour and checked out what was available. We decided on sharing these duck rillettes (think coarse pate) that came with bread, pickles and lovely duck fat fries. It was all so tasty.

We’d well and truly settled in by now, had a few drinks and eaten a great meal. Obviously dessert was next! The first was almost the highlight of the night - a creme brûlée donut. Even more impressive was that they flamed it right in front of us to create a delicious toffee crust. The donut itself was amazing too. We’d travel back to Denmark for this alone!

This glazed donut with vanilla ice cream was another very tasty offering as well. The contrast of soft dough and crisp cold ice cream was a lovely pairing.

If you’re visiting here it’s so important to allow some time to wander around and check out everything that’s available. It’d be a pity to miss out on something special - and there’s lots to see that is unique.

This whole concept is great and clearly the public agrees as they are voting with their feet and visiting in droves. We’re so glad we got to experience it ourselves.
