SUB STATION CAFE - ALEXANDRIA, SYDNEY

Sub Station Café

Knowing exactly where their ingredients have come from, and that they are all fresh, is very important to Sub-station owners Orit and Ram. The café, situated in a heritage listed Sub-station in Alexandia, boasts a nice homey look and feel with a range of family recipes on the menu.

Sub-station’s cooking philosophy is to not over complicate it. Rather, to use only the best ingredients and combine natural flavours to create dishes that really do stand out. Café owner Ram was pleasantly accommodating and brought out the three specials for us to try. The small facilities they use to create their dishes means that everything is made on the spot. Everything that came to the table was fresh and hot, the perfect lunch!

The first special was a bacon Quiche Lorraine served with mushrooms, poached egg, asparagus and a homemade tomato and olive oil salsa. It was the perfect warm meal for a cold day, and the mixture of flavours worked dreamily together.

The second was baked eggs, with a touch of Middle Eastern influence! The eggs were baked with roast tomatoes, onions, and smoky Kashkaval cheese melted on the top.

The third special was potato latkes with grilled haloumi, scrambled eggs, and a pear salsa.

We were lucky enough to also be given a dessert to try! A lemon sponge cake with lemon icing, sprinkled with icing sugar. The beautiful recipe has been handed down by Orit’s great, great grandmother, which was evident by the homemade essence of the cake. It was the perfect way to end an already perfect lunch!

The dishes were enjoyed with coffees brewed with Single Origin Roasters beans. Sub-station offers three different blends. The single of the week, decaf, and a special blend designed for black coffees.

Sub-station also has a lot to offer for a quick bite. Their muffins and savouries are made in-house every day, and the smoothies are also made with the freshest berries and mangoes.

Thank you so much to everyone at Sub-station for being so hospitable, and for making our experience there unforgettable. We most certainly will be back (the lemon sponge cake is calling our names!).
