SALMON & BEAR | NEWTOWN, SYDNEY

September 5, 2016

Salmon & Bear
226 King St
Newtown NSW

Salmon and Bear – is such a great name and it conjures up images of those beautiful gigantic bears standing by the river’s edge waiting to catch those yummy salmon. Thankfully we didn’t have to do that as Salmon and Bear are located in food hub of Newtown. It is a casual seafood eatery in a friendly atmosphere where the décor is designed to reflect as if you are in a cosy cabin.

The menu is varied with amazing and delicious combinations. Being HUGE seafood fans – especially Mlady this was heaven and it really was hard in trying to decide what to try.

We did try the “Catch of the day” fish – this was an Alphonsino fish from WA. It is a similar fish to the marvellous Barramundi being that it is white and flaky but with a slightly sweeter taste. It was presented on cast iron and it really was a lovely fish. The sauce to complement this that we chose was yoghurt and dill – such a killer sauce – loved it!

Our salad was the Moroccan – grated carrot, orange segments, radish, currants and mint with sherry vinaigrette. This had really nice refreshing flavours that all complimented each other. A lovely colourful salad.

A “special” we tried under the menu of “Roasted Veg” was the Brussel sprouts. Seriously – this is a really good way to eat Brussel sprouts as they have such a distinctive taste. Having them cooked this way was a very tasty alternative.

Next we tried was the Poke – Salmon. Now this had avocado with it – so as Sir loves his avocado – this was a winner with him. This dish had lots of flavour, was colourful and had interesting combinations. It was raw cubed salmon in soy and sesame dressing served with corn salsa and avocado on coconut rice. The softness of the rice and salmon with the crunchiness of the seaweed and fried shallots – loved this!

Another “Special” we tried was the Fisherman’s chowder. This came with a serving of crusty bread. This lovely chowder had prawn pieces, potato, carrot, delicate celery, and Tua Tua clams form N.Z. Lots of different textures. We really enjoyed this.

The Tacos which all came in a soft corn tortilla with cabbage, salsa Verde, pickled pink onions, coriander, line and sriracha majo. We tried the sticky soy glazed salmon, the crispy fish (Hoki N.Z) and the prawn and corn taco. These really were oh so good. Deliciously presented on a bread board. The aroma was absolutely mouth-watering with amazing flavours.

We managed to fit in dessert (By Gelato Messina). Mlady had the “Bear” – a chocolate gelato cookie sandwich – Yummo. Being a chocoholic – she just had to have this. Sir had “Salmon” – a strawberry gelato paddle pop dipped in white chocolate – Yum Yum. Sir enjoyed these refreshing flavours.

The food here is substantial with a great varied menu that has incredibly tasty combinations and flavours.

Sir and Mlady dined as guests of Salmon and Bear. A big thank you to Joe, Josh, Jane and Charlotte for taking care of us on the night.
