SYDNEY MORNING HERALD LUNAR MARKETS | PYRMONT, SYDNEY

Sydney Morning Herald Lunar Markets 2017
Pymont Bay Park, Sydney

Happy Chinese New Year! Combined with this the annual Lunar Markets kicked off  again. The year of the rooster is certainly starting well, with live entertainment and Asian food stalls as far as the eye can see! There’s a festive vibe in the air and plenty of smiling Sydneysiders to be seen tapping their feet to the music.

Food, glorious food! It all looks so tempting it’s hard to know what to choose. Chinese, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Thai….all the outlets are pumping out dishes which look and smell fantastic. What a great setup they have here – tables and seating, bars, coloured lights and of course Sydney’s beautiful harbor right there.

We chose Bao Stop Sydney’s stall for some Chinese and Taiwanese street food. A popular choice was the Peking Duck fries, which we really wanted to try. The fries were topped with shredded duck, drizzled with hoisin style sauce and sprinkled with shallots. We have never had better loaded fries!

Next, some special fried marinated chicken pieces with delicious dipping sauces. The chicken coating was crunchy and flavoursome and the helping was very generous. A tasty choice indeed.

Yum Cha is a favourite of ours, so we queued at Lets Do Yum Cha for a dumpling hit. The tasty prawn and vegetable dumplings didn’t disappoint and the chicken dim sims were just as good. Another dish which caught our eye was Lo Mai Gai – chicken and sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf. That was delicious, with the moist rice having absorbed the lovely earthy taste of the lotus leaf and the warm, spiced chicken in the middle.

Dame T’s fave was the pork buns. Hard to imagine anyone not liking these puffy treats, and these were light and full of flavour. Dame M’s a big fan of custard, so  we couldn’t go past the custard buns. There were fluffy white buns with a thick filling and yellow thin-shelled ones with cute little eyes, both served warm.  The yellow ones were amazing and had gooey warm custard bursting from the centre!

Apart from the savoury food stalls, there was a great selection of sweet treats – some we hadn’t seen before. We headed to Waffle On A Stick, which had caught our attention earlier. What a feast for the eyes! The line-up of toppings was impressive – caramel, nutella, strawberries, melted chocolate…..all smothering a toasty warm waffle. They were delicious.

After dark the coloured lights were shining up through the trees creating such a beautiful setting. There were still a lot of people coming in through the security- checked entrance. We really had a great time and were very glad to be a part of this amazing festival. Thanks to Erin Forwood of Forhill Digital Agency for this invitation.
